Firestorm: Death of Darkness

About

This novel has protagonists with Autism and ADHD, but it is not the novel with Autistic and ADHD main characters that you expect. In the typical novel with neurodiverse characters, the target audience is NT (neurotypical) readers, and the goal is to get them to give us (this novel is Own Voices, the author has Autism and ADHD) the love and support that we need by a story that shows them how badly we need support. That is not this story. In this novel, the main characters are not given the love and support that they need. Instead, they are Tyler and Nick Bardin, the two princes of the royal house of Bardin, and the lord of a rival noble house launches a coup, murders their father, kidnaps their sister, and sends demons, zombies, assassins, and monsters after them to kill them. The dramatic question in this novel is: what happens when neurodiverse main characters do not get the support that they need, and, instead, they are given problems that would destroy most NTs, let alone people with neurodiversity? Do they just give up, or do they put up a fight and find a way to survive? The loss of their crowns is a metaphor for the loss of a sense of personhood that neurodiverse people experience as a result of having a disability, and Tyler and Nick going on a quest to retake the throne from the usurper represents the quest to reclaim their sovereignty over their own lives in the face of having Autism and ADHD. Will they win back their thrones? Read to find out!
